The Volcano Art Center is at Kilauea, the place of Pele the volcano goddess. The volcano is a dynamic and powerful volcano that changes the land form every time it has an action. From this dynamic quality the communities surrounding the volcano derives their culture and history. The Volcano Art Center was created to promote, develop, and perpetuate the artistic and cultural heritage of Hawaii's people and environment and this vision is put into life through the activities in the visual, literary, and performing arts. Their members are composed of artists, performers, writers, scientists and educators. VAC presents different variety shows, craft shows and fairs every year to promote their vision and culture. One of the Volcano Art Center activities for this year is the 12th Annual Spring Dance Contest on March 27, 2009 at 7:30 P.M. at Kilauea Military Camp Theater in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. This dance contest will be the venue for Big Island choreographers and dancers to reveal their new work. The Spring Dance Contest not only allows pervious choreographers and dancers to join the contest but also new comers are allowed to join. The Spring Dance Contest was created last 1993 in honor of Earnest Morgan. Earnest Morgan was one of the most influential Big Island contemporary dancers. When the contest is done there will be an open dialogue between the choreographers and audience members. This dialogue will give the choreographers a chance to explain to the audience their performance. While for the audience might be able to give new ideas for their next performance. The admission fee can be purchased ahead of time costing $9.00 but for tickets that will be purchased at the door the cost will be $10.00. The Spring Dance Contest tickets will be available at the Volcano Art Center Gallery, Kilauea General Store, and KMC General Store in Volcano; Keaau Natural Foods in Keaau; and CD Wizard and The Most Irresistible Shop in Hilo. Call the Volcano Art Center at 967-8222 or visit www.volcanoartcenter.org purchases done through your credit card. Author:
