The Amazing Prince Khi Celebration
One of the most important members of Hawaiian nobility was Prince Jonah Khi Kalanianaole. Prince Jonah Khi Kalanianaole was born on March 26, 1871 and died on January 1, 1922. He was the prince at the time Hawaii was overthrown by American residents on 1893.
The prince participated in the rebellion against the Republic of Hawaii and was thrown in jail because of this. When he got out he and his wife traveled to Europe and Africa and at these visits he was considered as a visiting royal. After a few years of his self-imposed exile he returned to Hawaii.
Upon his return to Hawaii the prince joined the Democratic Party but did not stay long. After a few years he switched to the Republican Party because he got disillusioned that the Democratic Party was not that aggressive in fighting for the Hawaii Independence. While being with the Republican he was given a strong leadership position. This position gave him a chance to join the U.S. Congress.
While Prince Jonah Khi Kalanianaole was with the U.S. Congress it was the time where he made his greatest contribution. This notable achievement was the creation of Hawaiian Homes Commission Act which was signed by President Warren Harding.
